Exploring Poldark's Cornwall from Fowey

Day One (half-day)

Fowey to Truro (45-minute drive)

  • Main Town often referenced in Poldark (not sure if they filmed here though)
  • Beautiful Church/ Cathedral and great shopping
  • Lovely to walk around – good pub lunches

Truro to Land’s End (65-minute drive)

  • Just because it’s where the Land Ends
  • £7 entry to carpark and to access Land’s End
  • Not Poldarky but a good place to say you’ve been

Land’s End to Porthgwarra (15-minute drive)

  • Tiny fishing cove with crystal clear water
  • Cobbled slipway used a few times in Poldark
    • Pilchards landing
    • Poldark nudie swim
    • Mark’s escape to France
  • The road in is very tight so need to take it easy

Porthgwarra to Porthcurno Cove (15-minute drive)

  • Used as Nampara Cove in Poldark
  • Beautiful beach, clear green water and big craggy cliffs
  • One of the most beautiful spots in Cornwall – used a lot in tourist brochures etc

You could also visit Kynance Cove (on the Lizard Penninsula), around 1hr 15 mins from Porthcurno Cove). It features the Nampara Estate in Poldark occasionally.

Day Two (half day)

Fowey to Charlestown (20 -minute drive)

  • Beautiful Harbour with lots of tall ships
  • Used as Falmouth in Poldark series
  • Excellent breakfast/ lunch at ‘The Longshore’ – scallops awesome

Charlestown to Park Head (40-minute drive)

  • Just south of Padstow
  • Bedruthan Steps
  • Spectacular rock formations in ocean
  • A little bit like the 12 Apostles in Australia
  • Used as background for lots of cliff gallops and walks in Poldark
  • Visit The Long Store – 11/10 for food

Park Head to Holywell Bay (30-minute drive)

  • Twin Rock Islands off coast
  • Used as Warleggan Bay in Poldark
  • Beautiful Beach and lots of caves

Day Three (half day)

Fowey to Wheal Coates Tin Mine (65-minute drive)

Note: If coming from Holywell Bay above, 30 minutes

  • Near Perrenporth
  • Walk from Wheal Coates Mine down to Chapel Porth Beach (10-15 mins)
  • Mines and nearby St Agnes Head also used for lots of clifftop gallops
  • Chapel Porth Beach lovely – cliff caves, sandy, cafe

Wheal Coates Tin Mine to St Ives (30-minute drive inland road, 60-minute drive if by coast)

  • Beautiful Harbour and old town (note: Carbis Bay nearby, but we didn’t go)
  • Don’t think it has any Poldark references but is a lovely place

St Ives to Botallack Mines (30-minute drive)

  • Main site of the Poldark Mines in the series
  • Wheal Owles is the mine used as Wheal Leisure in Poldark (off on your left from the carpark, the only one with a chimney still standing)
  • Wheal Crowns (two mines down close to the water on cliffs) are Grambler in Poldark
  • Venue towards Wheal Crowns and then walked across to Wheal Owles
  • Probably allow at least 30 minutes for exploring (but well work a hour – it is just so beautiful).
